If you have a 10-inch dutch oven, use about 2/3 to 3/4 of the ingredient amounts but keep the temperature and time about the same.
If you have an 8-inch dutch oven, use about 1/2 of the ingredient amounts but keep the temperature and time about the same.
If no temperature is listed, use 350 degrees.
See Heat Settings page for temperature and coal placement

I'm trying this recipe at a kids event and would like to use wood for
authentic 1850's cooking. Did you use wood? Need more wood
coal help. most recipes are with charcoal.
Oct 09, 2015 - Dutch Oven Dude@Pat - Yes, I almost always use wood. If you read the text at the
end of each recipe, there is a link to Heat
Settings where you can learn more about coal placement, whether
it's briquettes or wood coals.
Jan 05, 2016 - ShannonMy potential future son in law made this in the Dutch
Oven we got him for Christmas. It is hands down THE
BEST apple crisp I have ever had. My father was an
apple crisp connoisseur, so I have had my fair share!
Thank you!!!
Mar 31, 2016 - JeremySo we changed the recipe for what we had on hand:
4 sliced apples
Covered in a cinnamon brown sugar mix
Crust was made of
2/3 cup butter
2 packs instant oatmeal
2/3 cup bisquick
1 cup honey
1/4 cup hot water
Put the apples in a le creuset pan covered in the mix I had made up for some homemade donuts
Put it in oven uncovered while it preheated
Made up the crust and cooked 40' @ 350

I've made this dessert on many
occasions for different group's of
people and it's always a favorite.
DON'T forget the vanilla bean ice
cream!
Oct 01, 2017 - FeliciaI tried making this and the results were foul. There was mold
all around the edge of the pan which wasn't there before. I
added only the amount of sugar it asked for and it came out
sickly sweet. The oats were mushy and the apples still stayed
soft. It's a no for me, sorry.
Jun 24, 2018 - Randall Keen I have been using this recipe for my scout troop for years.
It is always a hit
Jan 29, 2019 - GaryI made this at our open house and thinking like a baker I used granny smith apples. I should have used gala or some other as the final product was too tart. Other than that it was a hit and tasted really good!
Mar 25, 2019 - Ryan S. ClementMy son's Scout troop out of State College, PA just made this
recipe for a Cookaree at Seven Mountains Scout Camp this
weekend. It turned out amazing and many people who tried it
were begging for the recipe. Very yummy!
Oct 19, 2022 - Bruce TI've made this recipe many times. It's always a crowd pleaser. On a couple of occasions, I've forgotten to have enough sugar or one of the spices, but it always turns out great. I've used your recipes enough so that I've become a fairly decent dutch oven chef. :D
